October 28 2017 marked a special occasion for the RAAF with a major celebration held at RAAF Base Williamtown, NSW. The special event commemorated the centenary of the Australian Flying Corps and the first four combat Squadrons – Numbers 1,2,3 and 4 Squadrons, formed to operate as part of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) in 1916. The squadrons fought in the Middle East and the Western Front in Europe during World War I  1914-1918.  Although the AFC disbanded at the end of the Great War, it formed the backbone of the new Australin Air force, formed on 31 March 1921.
